TriathlonA triathlon, which is three events combined, swimming, cycling, and running is for those people that love a big test in endurance. The way you are judged in a triathlon is in over all course time, which includes transition times between the three events. Traditionally you swim 750 meters, bike 20 kilometers and run 5 kilometers. There are many triathlons held throughout the US throughout the year. There are beginner triathlons, women’s, kids, sprint, off road, half, and full styles. There are many great scenic triathlons that go on throughout the year, and one of the most popular is the Iron Man championship held in Hawaii. This is also one of the hardest triathlons to compete in because of the physical endurance needed. When triathlons first started in the US in 1978 there were only 12 men who competed the race, but the next year there were 13 men and one woman who crossed the finish line. Triathlons have grown a lot since then. They became more popular in the 1980s and in 1982 it was the last year you didn’t need to qualify to be in an iron man contest. That was the year they showed some dramatic footage of Julie Moss crawling on her hands and knees to finish second place in the iron man event. This is when interest in triathlons really exploded. Now today you can find triathlons going on all throughout the US during all different times of the year. |
